It seems Gippal and Rikku have a history together. He knows Brother and Buddy and calls Rikku Cid's girl. They must have been at least good friends when they were younger. It also seems their relationship hasn't really evolved from childhood days. Gippal still teases Rikku, and she still gets mad at him for it. Although they are smiling while doing this little act, so it almost seems like a tradition of some sort o_O.

I think about 1/3 of fangirls swooned when Gippal said his famous line of "We made quite the couple". Most took it as that they were romantically involved before, but it could also be interpreted as saying they were best friends. Always together, causing havoc wherever they went, and so on. And sadly, I think this is the case.

It's made quite obvious in the game, that Rikku has a crush on someone (no, I can't imagine the object being Auron or Tidus), and Yuna and Paine are already guessing who it is. There's little hints throughout the game, that Rikku likes Gippal. As for if Gippal likes Rikku, well, it's never said. It could be a one-sided love.

But they do have the base to become lovers at some point. They've been friends for forever and I think Gippal has seen Rikku in her worst state, so she doesn't have to be afraid of him ducking out. And yes, I support this pairing (besides, Gippal x Paine is just...weird).
